Fenn is much too young to be expected to hunt, fish and otherwise support his family. He is even too young to fly a seagull. Yet he is eager to prove he can pull his weight. With his older brother, Pitr and their clever friend, Jayd, they set out to do just that until a near-death encounter with a wild crow forces Fenn to admit he just isn’t ready yet. Unexpectedly, he is invited on his very first village hunt with his family. It is the happiest day of his young life until he spots a stranger in the forest, chases her and becomes separated from his party when he slips on a rock and is knocked unconscious. Waking only to find himself in unknown Crow territory, Fenn becomes embroiled in the legacy of a war fought between the Gull tribe and the Crow tribe more than a generation ago, and now threatens to break out again unless he can bring the two once-united peoples together. But first, Pitr, Jayd and the stranger in the forest are determined to find Fenn and bring him safely back home. “The Black Blade” is a unique, engrossing tale based in a land inhabited by creatures who have learned to domesticate and harness the power of the larger birds in order to hunt, fish and eke out a living on the harsh pre-ice-age North American coast, long before humans or other larger mammals ever existed here.

This review is based on the EXCERPT of The Black Blade for the ABNA 2011 contest:Let me premise that I'm extremely short on time these days (with a 1yo at home) so anything I read really needs to reel me in immediately....
The Black Blade: A Gull Village Story by Sean Huxter is filled with fantasy elements that bring to mind popular YA pieces that feature creatures as lead characters. The writing brings to mind the work of Susan Cooper. Yet, this author has melded these familiar fantasy elements to create this lovely little world.
I enjoyed getting to know Jayd, Pitr and Fenn in the opening sequence. The angst of youth in this context is charming. Jinn's recollection of how Teel came to have Saltwater Fever was extremely well-paced and engaging.
And while I'd like to keep reading this story, I was unfortunately struggling with a fair bit of overwriting that could use a gentle surgical scalpel to tighten it up and improve overall pace.
Considering the target audience is YA, I'm not in anyway saying this would benefit from being 'dumbed down'...NO WAY...I'm just saying that I found too much extra writing (especially when the action was over). If the author is able to transfer some of the tightness and control of the action sequences to the non-action portions this book could do QUITE well with its intended audience and beyond.

The Black Blade A Gull Village Story Sean Huxter 9781453835609 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this excerpt because it drew me into a completely new world. I find this a really original idea for YA fantasy. I love the idea of rival tribes of gull and crow riders, and it's so interesting discovering what life is like for these furry creatures. The description of the salmon hunt is fantastic! I could really picture it, and I like how all the elements are portrayed gull riders above the school of fish, harpoons, etc. Blueberries must be really large for these characters, right? Despite the suspenseful hunt, this excerpt felt a little bit slow, but not so much that I wouldn't read on. The dialogue occasionally feels contrived to transmit information to the reader, especially Fenn's little speech beginning with "I needed those fish". A lot of the world-building is working really well (the hunt, for example), so it'd be nice if the information Fenn reveals here could be introduced more subtly and naturally. Overall, I'm just really impressed by the originality of this book!
